Arthur Ma - International dispute resolution

Partner, DaHui Lawyers

Arthur Ma is a partner in DaHui Lawyers' litigation and arbitration team. He earned his LLB from Peking University Law School and an LLM from the George Washington University Law School. Prior to joining DaHui, from 2001 to 2015, he worked with top international and PRC law firms, including Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, Herbert Smith Freehills and Fangda Partners in their Shanghai, London, Washington DC, Hong Kong and Beijing offices. In England in 2005 and 2006, he served as the private law assistant to a former Judge of the Supreme Court of Hong Kong in charge of construction and arbitration, who was also one of the founders of the Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre. Arthur participated in first arbitration in 2002 when he successfully represented a Swiss company against its Chinese supplier in an international trade dispute before the China International Economic and Trade Arbitration Commission (CIETAC) in Shanghai. This case would become the first of many in which Arthur has helped his clients achieve their business goals and maximise their economic interests.

An expert in his field, Arthur has accumulated extensive experience handling complex commercial arbitration and litigation cases thanks in large part to his solid PRC law background and international nature of his work. Indeed, he is especially adept at handling China-related international arbitration and PRC litigation cases involving international parties. He has appeared before various levels of courts in China and has built up a wealth of experience in arbitration before CIETAC. Arthur also has experience in arbitrations under the Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre (HKIAC), International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), International Centre for Dispute Resolution (ICDR), London Court of International Arbitration (LCIA) and United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL) rules. These cases have spanned a wide variety of industry and subject matters, including large-scale EPC contracts, joint venture contracts, equity transactions, private equity investments, international sales of goods, and overseas training contracts. In addition, he frequently acts as a PRC law expert in offshore litigation and arbitration cases. His most recent experience includes representing: a major state-owned project contractor in an UNCITRAL arbitration against its Singapore subcontractor in a dispute arising out of an EPC contract related to a water plant project in the Middle East; a private Chinese contractor in an UNCITRAL arbitration against an Indonesian project owner in a dispute arising out of an EPC contract related to a power plant project in Indonesia; a leading multinational exhibition company in an HKIAC arbitration against a Chinese individual in a dispute arising out of a non-compete agreement; a leading private equity fund in an HKIAC arbitration against its Chinese founders and a joint venture company in a share transfer agreement dispute; a leading industry-specific equity fund in its debt dispute before a local court in Shanghai; and a Fortune 500 US company as its defence lawyer in over 10 product liability civil actions before a court in Beijing. Arthur is well known in his field and has had the honour to be invited to write and speak on international dispute resolution topics on numerous occasions. In addition, he serves as a guest lecturer in the training programmes of several domestic and international law schools, including Peking University.

Arthur is admitted in China, the US (New York State), and the UK (England and Wales). He is fluent in Mandarin and English.

WWL says: Arthur Ma is "absolutely first class" and very highly valued by his clients.
